Lost in Sound

I painted this piece in March 2024, during a difficult period of my life when I was living in an unhealthy relationship and often felt overwhelmed by stress.
There were two places where I could find a little peace.
One was painting. I could put onto the canvas feelings that were difficult to put into words.
The other was music.
I would put on my headphones, leave the house and walk along the seafront, listening to music until, for a little while, everything around me became quieter. It gave me a private space where I could disconnect from the stress and simply be with myself.
This painting reflects that feeling. The closed eyes and headphones represent retreating into my own world, while the strong reds, dark areas and rough, expressive background carry some of the intensity I was feeling at the time. The blue surrounding the figure became, for me, a small space of calm amongst it all.
Music is still an important part of my life today. I still love putting on my headphones and walking by the sea — only now, I don't need it as an escape from stress. I can simply enjoy the music, the walk and the moment.
Painting remains another way I express what I cannot always say.
This piece is a memory of a difficult time, but more importantly, of the small place of peace I was able to create for myself inside it.
